Police in Kanpur Dehat in Uttar Pradesh have booked five police officers and a doctor in connection with the death of a 27-year-old businessman allegedly in police custody on Tuesday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Balwant Singh (27), a resident of Saraiyya Lalpur village, Police said. Singh’s family accused the police of torturing him, which led to his death. Singh from Kanpur Dehat was detained for questioning in a robbery case in which unidentified assailants robbed businessman Chandra Bhan Singh of Rs 4.5 lakh in the Shivli area.
Chandra Bhan said four people stole his money and jewellery. тАЬI filed an FIR. On Monday morning I learned that my nephew (Balwant) was being held for questioning. We went to the police, but they did not give us any details about his whereabouts, тАЭhe said.
Police Superintendent, Kanpur Dehat, Suniti said criminals on motorcycles had robbed a jeweller, Chandrabhan Singh Senger, a resident of Saraiyya Lalpur village, of gold ornaments and cash after throwing chilli powder in his eyes on 6 December.
Police officials from Shvli Police Station and SOG who were tasked with solving the case arrested three people: Avinash Kushwaha, Suraj and Shiva alias Kallu, he said. The trio had revealed the name of Balwant Singh, she added.
After Balwant’s body was delivered, the family of the victim took him home and discovered the wounds on his body. The victim’s family were shocked and denied performing the last rites of the Balwant on him until the autopsy is done.
The family had asked the CM to come to visit the family and also requested legal action against the allegedly guilty police officers, according to reports. The family also demanded a government job for Balwant’s wife and compensation of Rs 1 crore.
Balwant’s brother, Sachin Singh Sengar, said he saw his brother being beaten inside the Maitha police post. тАЬMy brother traded fodder for cattle. He was in Kanpur on the day of the robbery. But the police picked him up and tortured him,тАЭ he alleged.
